Painting Charles the Emu at Sunset

Meet Charles. A fictional Emu inspired by a real Emu 🥰

🟢 Available on my eBay store.

Emu’s have so much Character. With their big googley eyes and tufts of scraggly hair. I adore them!

Get ready to see how my sketches start out… yep they truly are a scribble! The less precious about it the better. The initial stage is simply about laying down the basic shapes, without taking my pen off of the paper too much. This enables the lines to flow and create movement.

Stage one of my painting

Colours are loose, expressive rather than precise.

I want the sunset to have the essence of wrapping around the bird, so I use warm colours against his cool feathers to give the illusion of the sky coming forward. Cool colours recede whilst warm colours bring things forward.

I become more detailed towards the end, adding in finer strokes and touches of light and shadow.
