Painting a Girl and Her Dogs

I feel so grateful to have such a connection to painting.

Yesterday I painted this gorgeous trio, a girl and her dogs.

For me, painting is a lot like reading a paper book, it locks me into the real world. And my subjects are everywhere, I really enjoy walking down the street and observing everything around me, that next piece of inspiration that becomes my next work of art.

What I really wanted to capture in this painting was the love and bond between the three of them. Her expression just oozes adoration.

As always I began the painting with a simple sketch and masked out the areas I wanted illustrative lines or bright highlights using masking fluid.

I started by filling in the background, because that sets the bar for the intensity of the feature subjects. I also applied a green undertone to the girls hair, which would later become black.

I’m quite randomly organised when I paint. I don’t have a particular order per se although I do start with painting skin and fur first. I always finish with the finer details of things like eyes at the end, but sort of map them out half way through. I enjoy working on medium or rough 100% cotton watercolour paper, and working wet on wet – except for fine detail in which I wait for the paper to be fully dry.
