What’s something you believe everyone should know.
I believe that all humans are creative, even if they think they aren’t. That everyone has artistic abilities, it’s just about finding your thing. For so many years I thought my art was rubbish, that I’d never be as good as anyone else. So I set myself a goal – paint every day.
And I have (accept one) and it’s interesting to see not only the progression of my art work, but how my confidence has grown and my style has begun to emerge.

I’m so proud of my Rainbow Lorikeet because it was a scary step for me. Not only is it a big piece to tackle with watercolour at 56cm by 76cm, but my backgrounds until this were always quite light. I was so scared of contrast, of going too dark.

So before I embarked on this painting I grabbed my sketchbook and created a rough composition of how things might look. I then decided what colour palette I’d use, and some of that was thinking about current home decor styles because this big watercolour painting will look beautiful on a living room or bedroom wall.

And then I layered the background step by step and decided how dark I’d take it in stages.

I added a gold acrylic paint around the edge of the leaves and some of the flowers. I love flowing lines within my paintings whether they are inky, masked out or something more bold like this gold.

My Rainbow Lorikeet was so fun to create. I used masking fluid to follow my line drawing and then flooded each space with rich blends of watercolour. Layering two different shades at the same time allows them to merge and create a seamlessly beautiful flow within the painting.

Gold and navy are very striking next to one another don’t you think!?
So that’s my Rainbow Lorikeet Floral watercolour painting complete and ready to find a loving home.
