Painting a man and his dog

What have you been working on?

I was walking to Shelly Beach in Manly, Australia this week when I spotted a man and his dog just hanging out together on the rocks, looking out at the ocean. That became the inspiration for one of my latest illustration paintings β€˜Man and his dog.’

I wanted to depict the friendship between them. There were a few elements I therefore changed – I brought the man and his dog closer side by side, I put the man’s arm around the dog and made the composition purely about the ocean excluding the sky.

I intentionally paint in a way that looks somewhat incomplete, to give the illusion of movement, light and interesting shapes.

All of my paintings begin with a sketch in ink. I adore scruffy lines – ode to Quentin Blake and Roald Dahl for your marvellous Inspiration growing up. My favourite artist and author all rolled into one.
