Painting Ellie the Chihuahua

What is your favorite hobby or pastime?

I think myself very lucky to have grown up not only surrounded by artists, but being taught by them. My granny was an artist who worked in watercolour and pastel. My dad sculpting in clay and painting in oil. Over the years I have worked in many mediums. But none won my heart like watercolour.

I loved painting Ellie with her big cute ears and her button nose. Chihuahuas have such tiny cute faces yet all that I have met have huge personalities.

Ellie is quite fluffy, so I built the layers up with watercolour through to pencil and pastel for the finer details of the fur.

As a pet portrait artist I like to strike the balance between realism and Impressionism. As incredible as photo realistic portraits are, my preference as an artist is that it has a painterly, loose feel, otherwise I’d just frame a photo!

Zoom out and it’s realistic, zoom in and all of those wonderful shapes that watercolour creates as it dries are visible.
