Fun Scribbles – the Cat and the Fan

What details of your life could you pay more attention to?

As an artist, I think it’s really important to make time for fun scribbles. A time to let your hands do the talking. My scribbles are generally things that pop into my head, a scene or a theme usually inspired by something I’ve seen in the real world.

The Cat and the Fan

When I’m painting a portrait, the most important thing to me is the expression. Capturing the essence of the animals character. However when I’m creating scribbles, that essence needs to be captured in a different way because there’s less detail. So I focus on the story – what’s happening? What are they doing? Is there movement? And then I figure out how best to portray that.

In this painting, I wanted to give the illusion of the cats fur being blown by the fan. So once I’d painted the impression of fur, I added a little water to it and then quickly wiped it sideways using a tissue. This tiny added detail made all the difference in adding context to the illustration.
